As you progress, you get better sponsors that give you more money, allowing you to get better cars to do more types of events with even better sponsors. As you complete events, you get sponsors who give you money if the player meets specific objectives in a race. Once you get enough money, you can start your own racing team and repair an old Ford Mustang. You instead have to race for other teams. In Grid, you start rock bottom with no funds and not even your own car. If you were to ask someone why they like Grid so much, the career is the reason why.
#RACE DRIVER GRID THEME DRIVERS#
One final difficulty tweak the player can do is lock the camera to the drivers head.ĭepending on what difficulty settings you choose, you will go through the games career mode at a quicker or slower pace. You can also lower the number of flashbacks you have. You also get a limited number of flashbacks in each race to not encourage the player to spam them in a race.

This includes looking at car crashes in slow motion, which is awesome. Despite this, flashbacks act more like an instant replay allowing for the player to get a detailed look at the events that transpired before they hit the flashback button. This sounds like it’s copying Forza, but a mechanic similar to this in the Forza franchise was first seen in Forza Motorsport 3, which came out in 2009 AFTER Grid. The game also includes a flashback system that allows you to rewind time. I would also like to add that when the traction control is off, it’s REALLY OFF, meaning that you’ll do a huge burnout if you hold down the accelerator at the start of the race. This includes turning off the stability control, automatic gears, braking assist and the traction control. The player can adjust the difficulty if they want a more challenging experience. In Grid, you’re jumping the hills of San-Fransico in a Dodge Viper. The arcade nature is personified in the game’s tutorial as in the previous game in the ‘Race driver/TOCA’ franchise the tutorial level pits you driving a Mercedes touring car racing on a contemporary race track. You still have to brake, apply proper throttle control and follow the racing line to do well. Cars are very responsive, and the game lets you off with some mistakes that would lead you careening off into a wall in other games. In this case, Grid leans towards it being more towards the arcade side of handling. Sim-cade is a mix between an arcade-style of driving and a simulator-style driving. Grid adopts a sim-cade style of Handling. “Ok, but is the game actually fun to play?” Yes. By comparison, other racing games before and after look like nail salons with clean menus and A.I drivers that feel very A but not very I as the only thing they do is stick to the racing line with them occasionally overtaking and in some cases (Forza) the rival drivers being utterly oblivious to where you are and often ram you off the track. You can spin it any way you want, real-life motorsport is NOT a clean sport, and Grid reflects this. They make mistakes, such as taking the wrong racing line, all the way to creating pile-ups. The car crashes don’t just rival other racers in terms of damage physics it rubs shoulders with Cirterions Burnout and bugbears FlatOut in terms of car damage. I the case of the player does wreck their car, the game will go into slow motion, and the screen will turn red for a few seconds, simulating the blood rushing to the front of the drivers head as he is kicked by the G-Forces he’s experiencing.

Wheels will go flying, the front ends of cars will become un-recognisable. High-speed crashes don’t just create a few dents they rip to tear the car’s bodywork. What sets Grid apart from other racers is its grit. As the race countdown ends, your career begins. As you do so, the other cars on the grid follow suit and create an orchestra of pure engine noise. The loud shouting of its V10 engine echoed off into the sea and passed between the skyscrapers.Īs the cinematic cutscene ends, you hold down the accelerator. Its aggressive looks, a giant rear wing and a Black Raven as one of its vinyls made it an instant fan favourite. The cars revved their engines the crowds of people up-roared in excitement, eager for the 600BHP of mechanical thunder to let loose on the streets of San Francisco. Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, the icons of the modern American muscle cars were lined up at this very moment with one goal. On the tarmac near the shorefront lay a pack of pure American muscle cars. The seagulls and crashing waves of San Francisco bay are drowned out as the noise of mechanical engines and the smell of high octane fuel permeate the atmosphere.
